Weihenstephaner 1516 Kellerbier

I hadn’t heard of this release, but when I spotted these on the shelf, I had to buy them. One of my favorite all around breweries is Weihenstephaner, so it was an instant purchase. I had high expectations, and the label stating that it was a special release “to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Bavarian Purity Law” only added to it. Unfiltered beers are always intriguing to me, and I’m pretty new to the kellerbier/zwickelbier variety.

Scent

The scent reminds me quite a bit of Weihenstephaner Original, a helles lager, but not as funky…and perhaps a bit smoother overall. Whatever it is, it is less pungent.

Taste

This is a delicious beer. The flavor is again somewhat similar to their original lager, but there is a definite slightly tangy, almost spicy, flavor and aftertaste.

Overall

It’s too bad that this is a limited release. It is yet another great offering from the masters of brewing, Weihenstephaner. This one is pretty uneventful and perhaps a bit unmemorable in a way, but it’s just a very crisp and delicious beer. It feels very light and clean, especially considering it’s unfiltered, so this would make for a great choice to sip on all afternoon and evening. I can also see it tasting quite nice with a variety of food, but especially anything grilled.
